Winemaking at Meteora Vineyard
At Meteora, winemaking is guided by a philosophy of balance, site expression, and authenticity. Focused on Mediterranean and alternative grape varieties suited to the Granite Belt climate, the wines reflect freshness, texture, varietal character, and a strong sense of place. Through thoughtful viticulture and minimal intervention winemaking, Meteora is helping shape a modern and distinctive future for Queensland wine.
Meet our Chief Winemaker
Andy Williams is an award-winning winemaker based in Queensland’s Granite Belt, a region he has become deeply connected to over many years working within the local wine industry. While winemaking was not part of Andy’s original career path, everything changed when he chose to study Wine Science, discovering a profession where creativity and science could come together in a deeply rewarding way. That decision provided the technical foundation for his craft while igniting a lasting passion for Queensland wine and the future potential of the Granite Belt.
Today, as Chief Winemaker at Meteora, Andy combines technical precision with a strong respect for vineyard expression, site character, and varietal individuality. His approach focuses on crafting wines that not only reflect the unique conditions of the Granite Belt, but also contribute to the evolving story of Queensland wine. At the heart of Andy’s work is a strong belief in the future of the Queensland wine industry. He remains actively involved with industry groups at both regional and national levels, believing collaboration, innovation, and shared knowledge are essential to elevating the profile of Queensland wines on the Australian stage.
Andy sees enormous untapped potential in the Granite Belt’s altitude, soils, climate, and progressive winemaking culture. He believes the future of the region lies not only in what it grows and produces, but also in how it tells its story, through stronger education, marketing, tourism, and national recognition. Central to that vision is a commitment to producing wines that honestly reflect their origin: wines shaped by climate, soil, season, and the hands that make them. That is the future of Queensland wine Andy continues to work towards every day.
Our Philosophy
At Meteora, our focus is on expressive, food-friendly wines with balance, texture, and personality. There is a clear respect for vineyard character and a sense that the site is being allowed to speak for itself.
At the same time, Meteora is helping reshape perceptions of the Granite Belt as a whole. The region has become defined by innovation, energy, and a willingness to explore varieties better suited to its unique conditions. The phrase “Altitude, Attitude, and Authenticity” captures that spirit well. It is a region increasingly recognised for individuality rather than imitation - a place where wine lovers can discover wines with genuine character and a strong sense of place.
The estate itself reflects that same ambition. Through the development of a modern winery, the region’s first wine cave, luxury accommodation, and immersive visitor experiences, Meteora is contributing to the Granite Belt’s emergence as a premium wine and tourism destination. It is helping shift the narrative from a rural Queensland wine region to a destination people actively seek out to experience.
Ultimately, what sets Meteora apart is that it is not simply producing wine. It is helping shape the evolving identity and future direction of the Granite Belt itself. The wines form part of a much larger story - one grounded in place, resilience, Mediterranean influence, and the desire to create something lasting for future generations.
Alternative Grape Varieties
Rather than relying solely on traditional varieties, Meteora champions grapes that are naturally suited to our Granite Belt climate, and thrive in high-altitude conditions bringing a distinct personality to the wines. These often include Mediterranean varieties, chosen for drought tolerance and natural balance, varieties that retain acidity and freshness derived from our decomposed granite soils, grapes that offer structure, spice, and savory complexity rather than overt ripeness. This approach yields wines that are more sustainable in the vineyard and more distinctive in the glass.
In many ways, Meteora is helping lead the conversation around the future of Australian wine. By embracing climate-adapted viticulture and alternative grape varieties, the estate is contributing to a broader shift in thinking across the industry. Its influence extends beyond its own vineyard, encouraging experimentation, ambition, and greater confidence in the potential of the Granite Belt region.
Here at Meteora, we grow: Shiraz, Chardonnay, Aglianico, Lagrein, Vermentino, Viognier, Fiano, Albarino, Barbera, Montepulciano, Saperavi, Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, White Muscat, and Black Muscat.
