Meet our Cellar Door and Restaurant Manger
Massimo Pirone was born and raised in the south of Italy, where his passion for hospitality began at a young age. Over the years, he built his experience working across Europe in cities including Amsterdam, Rome, Napoli, and Barcelona, developing a deep appreciation for food, wine, and genuine hospitality.
After moving to Australia 10 years ago, Massimo quickly fell in love with the country and decided to make it his home. He spent many years with the Gemelli Group on the Gold Coast, where he met Andrew and Karen, Meteora Vineyard's founders, and formed strong connections within the industry.
Coming from a family with a long tradition of winemaking in Italy, wine has always been a central part of Massimo’s life. Four years ago, he began importing his family’s wines into Australia, combining his heritage with his passion for sharing authentic Italian wines and culture.
With extensive experience in hospitality and the wine industry, Massimo is excited to be part of this new journey in such a beautiful wine region and looks forward to creating memorable experiences for guests.
Wine Cave
Allow yourself to be transported to the vineyards of Europe with a visit to our wine cave. This region-first experience offers natural, climate controlled barrel storage located deep underground. Inspired by the way the cellar had been carved directly into the cliffs beneath New Zealand's Gibbston Valley vineyard, our mission was to create something equally special here on the Granite Belt. What began as a romantic idea quickly evolved into one of the most technically demanding parts of the entire vineyard project, requiring extensive excavation, engineering and precision, with controlled blasts shifting over 800 cubic metres of solid granite to create the foundation for the cave. Our wine cave is one of the defining features of Meteora Vineyard, a space shaped by engineering, craftsmanship and deep respect for the landscape surrounding it.
The Design
"The winery was conceived as a bold architectural intervention within the rugged landscape of Ballandean. A form that deliberately contrasts and complements its natural surroundings. Composed of black vertical battens, warm timber elements, and grounded brickwork, the material palette draws from both the rawness and richness of the region while establishing a strong and contemporary identity.
The building is intentionally abrupt in its placement within the landscape, emerging as a sculptural object and a distinct landmark amongst the vines and granite terrain. Rather than receding into the environment, the design stands as a place-maker, creating a memorable destination that anchors the site and reinforces the winery’s presence within the broader landscape.
The interplay of dark cladding, tactile masonry and stone, and natural timber creates a balance between refinement and robustness, reflecting the character of the wine-making process itself. Vertical battens provide rhythm, shadow, and depth across the façade, while the masonry grounds the building to the earth and timber introduces warmth and human scale.
Through its strong form, restrained palette, and deliberate relationship to the landscape, the winery establishes a contemporary architectural identity that is both contextual and iconic."

Sustainability
Our mantra centres around sustainability. Utilising solar power, rain water tanks, native gardens, and repurposing existing materials, Meteora is a reflection of its natural environment, and an homage to the region.
The Build
"It has been a privilege to help bring Andrew and Karen's vision to life and create a space that reflects the character, quality, and experience that is Meteora Vineyard. From the beginning, the trust, collaboration, and passion for the project made the entire process rewarding for our team. Building a cellar door is more than constructing a building, it's creating a welcoming destination where people gather, connect, and experience the story behind the wines. We are proud to have contributed to a project that will become an important part of the winery’s future and visitor experience. We sincerely appreciate the confidence placed in us throughout the journey and look forward to seeing the cellar door enjoyed for many years to come."
